2局上小熊靠著觸身球保送和內野安打攻佔一、二壘，2人出局的情況下小熊輪到投手Arrieta打擊，巨人以為能輕鬆化解危機，球數領先的Bumgarner大意失荊州，面對Arrieta投出偏高速球，Arrieta一棒拉出左外野全壘打牆、形成1發三分砲，小熊一瞬間取得3：0領先。

巨人3局下終於有所突破，Denard Span敲出二壘安打，2出局後Buster Posey掌握Arrieta偏高速球，擊出中間方向穿越安打，幫助巨人打破鴨蛋。

5局上巨人隊快腿Denard Span再扮演追分關鍵角色，1人出局敲出三壘安打，隨後靠著Brandon Belt的高飛犧牲打，Span回到本壘得分，巨人追到只剩1分差。

期望Bumgarner一夫當關的巨人出現危機，Bumgarner投完5局用了101球提前退場，被敲7支安打、挨了1發三分砲，巨人後段戰需交給不穩的牛棚，形勢對巨人並不樂觀。

Arrieta主投5局，被敲5支安打，失掉2分，送出5K，打擊方面轟出驚奇的三分砲，關鍵一擊幫助球隊取得3：2領先。
